Domestic violence is not limited to physical assault. UAE law also recognises psychological, sexual and economic harm within family relationships.
Our family lawyers advise individuals on urgent protection measures, reporting options and the effect of domestic violence concerns on related family proceedings.
Federal Decree-Law No. 13 of 2024 is the current federal framework for protection against domestic violence and covers physical, psychological, sexual and economic harm, as well as threats, neglect and exploitation within qualifying family relationships.
The law provides mechanisms for reporting incidents, emergency shelter, medical documentation and restraining orders that may restrict contact or prevent the person concerned from approaching the victim’s home, workplace or other specified locations.
These protections apply independently of whether related divorce, custody or personal-status proceedings later fall under the UAE Personal Status Law or the civil personal-status framework for non-Muslims.
The immediate legal route depends on the level of risk, the type of alleged violence and whether urgent protective measures are required.

Contact the police or appropriate support service where safety, physical violence or sexual violence is involved.

Medical reports, messages, photographs and other available records may assist the authorities in assessing the reported circumstances.

The Public Prosecution may issue a restraining order, including restrictions on contact or approaching specified locations.

Consider any connected criminal, divorce, custody, maintenance or other family-law applications.
Legal advice can help where immediate protection, family proceedings or the effect of a reported incident on children and financial arrangements needs to be addressed.
